There's a great brawl or memorable action scene in nearly every one of Carr's historical novels, which begs one question: why did he never pen a full-blown (historical) pirate mystery? Just imagine Stevenson's Treasure Island as perceived by Carr. Even my brief reading of the historicals has given such memorable encounters as Derwent's visit to the theatre in The Bride of Newgate, and the Battle of Pall Mall in The Deveil in Velvet...perhaps this was part of the appeal for Carr, that ability to cut loose and cry "Havoc!"

Not read this one yet, but I remember it being on your list of favourite impossible crimes even though the impossibility is a minor aspect of it. I shall, of course, get there in due course. And thanks, too, for chipping in to the 110th celebrations, greatly appreciated.JJ @ The invisible Eventhttps://theinvisibleevent.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516189026477178777.post-5993784831521123252016-11-30T13:49:49.839+01:002016-11-30T13:49:49.839+01:00Captain Cut-Throat is a bit of a standalone among ...Captain Cut-Throat is a bit of a standalone among Carr's historical work, as it has more adventure, action and spy stuff than his other historicals, but I found The Bride of Newgate to be excellent. It contains some of Carr's best writing and imaginative plotting from his historicals.

I do not recall all that much of The Witch of the Low-Tide, but it was definitely a lot better than one would expect from 1960s JDC. How does 'Captain Cut-Throat' fare in comparison to 'Bride of Newgate' and 'Witch of the Low Tide'...? Are any of these two titles worth purchasing? I'm always surprise to hear how much is actually available in Italian translations, which seem to range from the Golden Age classics to Detective Conan and Paul Halter. And just imagine the flight from the field of balloons play out on the screen! A missed opportunity to be sure! Great to celebrate his work today!Sergio (Tipping My Fedora)https://bloodymurder.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516189026477178777.post-87704125117411155252016-11-30T07:51:40.565+01:002016-11-30T07:51:40.565+01:00I liked this a lot as a historical adventure novel...I liked this a lot as a historical adventure novel, with, as you say the impossible murder bit thrown in.
