And I'm glad that Ianthe Jerrold and Freeman Wills Crofts made it into your list of recommendations! However, the opinions on that book seems to be very devided: John from Pretty Sinister Books hated the book as much as I did, but we both gave it a shot based on very positive reviews that had appeared on other blogs.

The Tokyo Zodiac Murders was published before The Decagon House Murders, but according to our guide into the Japanese detective story, Ho-Ling, it was the latter that got the ball rolling. In his review of the book, he said the following:

"Jukkakukan no Satsujin is hailed as the first in the wave of new orthodox detective novels in Japan. It is a Giant in the history of Japanese detective fiction. If there is something like a canon to detective fiction history, this would be in it."TomCathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03415176301265218101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516189026477178777.post-63597407080922953322015-12-29T01:55:02.059+01:002015-12-29T01:55:02.059+01:00Thanks for the list. Both share pretty much the same strengths and weaknesses (especially the sparse writing style and cardboard characters that are fully aware that they are in a mystery novel) and I eben found nine man's murder slightly stronger considering how obvious the solution in decagon house murders was. I also think the honor of launching the Japanese neo-orthodox movement should go to the Tokyo Zodiac Murders but might be mistaken there. Otherwise a very nice list and thanks for some very interesting sounding suggestions!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
