The trick is dressed up. Only problem is that, as I said in my review, is that's hard to accept that the trick would work more than once. I'm not sure if I'm really disappointed because it sounded completely ludicrous, along the lines of The Grey Room by Eden Phillpotts (one of the worst locked room mysteries I've ever encountered).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5516189026477178777.post-31389777504030807202016-11-20T09:37:12.918+01:002016-11-20T09:37:12.918+01:00Let us know if you're able to locate a copy of...Let us know if you're able to locate a copy of the story, because it's completely unavailable at the moment. The book began well but turned out to be a big disappointment. Not sure whether I'd like to read anymore of him. But he has much more of his work in the public domain and some of them appear to be more traditional detective stories.

Luckily, I always adjust my expectations when trying something (obscure) from the late 1800s/early 1900s. So I managed to avoid disappointment and found the impossible crime element somewhat fascinating. When I read about the flower my first thought was the unique flower in WEREWOLF OF LONDON and all its implications. Not that your story has anything to do with a werewolf, but see how my mind jumps around? :) I've never heard of Fred White, but it's always interesting to learn a bit more about the early days of mystery and doom lit. Douglas Greene even edited a volume of his Secret Service stories in 2003. But his detective fiction only seems to have attracted the attention of those cheap, print-on-demand publishers of public domain work.

Sadly, Who Killed James Trent? has, so far, eluded these publishing outfits.
